Creating a wallet: what happens first

Choose Create a new wallet and set a PIN, and the wallet can receive straight away. Before anything can be sent, you set a password and write down your recovery phrase.

Smartable has no account to sign up for. There is no email and no username, and nothing is created on a server — the wallet is made on your phone.

The first minute

  1. 01Open Smartable and choose Create a new wallet.
  2. 02Set a PIN. It opens the wallet on this phone. Where your phone supports it, you can also turn on quick unlock with your fingerprint or face.
  3. 03The wallet opens. Its addresses, balances and prices work straight away, so you can already receive.

Before you can send

The home screen asks you to Back up your wallet first. Until you do, receiving, balances and prices keep working — only sending waits.

Backing up is two things:

  • A password. It encrypts the wallet on this phone, and you need it to see your recovery phrase or export a key. Smartable cannot reset it. If you forget it, the only way back into the wallet is your recovery phrase.
  • Your recovery phrase. Twelve words, shown after you enter the password. Write them on paper, in order, and keep the paper away from the phone. Anyone with these words controls the wallet.

Do not photograph the words, take a screenshot, or keep them in notes, email, chat or a cloud document.

One sheet of paper is one place

A split backup keeps the wallet in several places — any 2 of 3, or any 3 of 5 — so losing one of them does not lose the wallet, and finding one of them is not enough to take it. See what a split backup is.

Already have a wallet?

Choose I already have a wallet to enter a recovery phrase, or Restore a split backup to rebuild it from shares. Moving to a new phone walks through both.

What the app shows

  • Create a new wallet
  • Back up your wallet first
  • Receiving, balances and prices keep working meanwhile. Only sending waits.

Security note

Never share your recovery phrase, private key, password or device PIN. Smartable will never ask for them or ask you to sign a transaction to “verify” or “recover” your wallet.
